We talk about the pressure of authenticity online. Gwen, who has a small but rabid following on various, obscure, alternative social media platforms, treats her online persona like an art project. "Gwen Skuddbutt isn't who I am on my tax forms," she says. "It’s a curated version of my id. The parts of me that want to wear neon, speak in riddles, and challenge the status quo."

Skuddbutt sought to redesign Gwen not as the cartoonish 10-year-old or the teenage hero from the original series, but as a hyper-realistic, mature of the character. The artist explained that the project was intended to be massive in scale, involving detailed storyboards, voice acting, and a cinematic narrative. However, this scale became the project's undoing.
